No. 001 — Books, Food, Drinks & Events

Kramers

Opened: 1976
It all happens here.

Kramers is a quintessential gathering spot with a remarkable history. An iconic independent bookstore, versatile events space, award-winning restaurant and illustrious bar, it’s an all-in-one kind of place. Kramers first opened its doors amid the Bicentennial celebration of 1976 as the first bookstore/café in Washington DC. Over the years, through expansions, subpoenas, and innumerable neighborhood changes, much of our business has remained constant, notably our commitment to providing access to the best books we can procure and to the most delicious, varied food we can produce.

A favorite is our Crab Benny.

Count on the Kramers’ book buyer and staff to surface the best, brightest and boldest new releases and classics, and to dig up undiscovered gems and authors on the rise.

Our in-house cafe and restaurant “All Day” boasts a menu developed by James-Beard-award-winning Culinary Director Vince Griffith with flavors inspired by American classics but, like DC itself, it’s a little bit French, too.

Join us for Comedy Nights.

Why not extend your dinner into an evening of jazz? Complement your coffee run with some comedy? We’re not kidding about that cultural stuff. From Jazz to comedy, cultural movers and shakers to authors about to get their big break — our in-store events and programs feature some of today’s most interesting personalities and performers.

Show your support every year on Independent Bookstore Day!
